El Paso Motorplex completed repairs of the bump at the finish line The finish line bump, or more of a hump, was not a problem to most cars that race at EPM but when you run 200 mph that small hump over so many feet is a bump and could make some fast light cars actually come off the ground. So in preparation for the Southwest Super Chargers race this Saturday the EPM crew had the finish line completely tore out and a re paved which should cure the problem.

by Ben de la Vega As soon as I stepped into the pits I got this feeling that the evening was going to be an amazing one!
And I was absolutely right.
The pits were completely packed with race trailors, including some race teams who have never been out there before. As a matter of fact, the time trials had to be extended to seven thirty because racers were still coming into the gates since they had to work. Because of that, the Dash-4-Cash was postponed, but it was well worth it. more

Ciskowski, Wiles, Cairns & Lynch win in Arroyo Seco by Ben de la Vega
All 56 racers that showed up at the track knew what they were getting themselves into as far as the weather was concerned. "Windy Conditions" But, with perseverence on everyone's part, then event was run successfully and finished by 2:20pm before the real windy conditions and dirt set in.
Time trials went on without a hitch and we were able to start eliminations an hour earlier than usual.
The reaction time contest was really interesting as seven racers kept chopping down the tree. In the end it was Dave Rodriguez taking the top honor with his .501 light.
25 racers entered the Dash-4-Cash and after the eliminator was over Ted Killian took home $250 after dialing his Vega in with a 11.04 and ran his 11.04 with a 2!
Before the start of the first round of Pro there was a 100 ft wide dirt devil that rolled across the track past the finish line which proved that we had to get things underway.
Joe Ciskowski Pro Winner Sammy Torres 2nd - Doug Hollars 3rd
Eighteen Pro cars took to the strip for eliminations and in the end it was Joe Ciskowski (Chevy) who took the win in the class finals Placing Slammin' Sammy Torres (chevy) in the runner up position with Studedude Doug Hollars (Cadillac) taking home third.
Sean Cairns Motorcyle Winner
Terry Wright 2nd - Marios Burgos 3rd
Motorcycle class was great with 13 bikes taking on the windy track conditions to duke it out for the over all win. And in the end it was Pornstache, Sean Cairns going home with the win over Terry Wright who came in runner up. There had to be a third place runoff between Anthony Brown-Silva and Marios Burgos with Marios winning third place.
Andy Wiles Modified Winner
Chris Bustamante 2nd - Nach Nolasco 3rd
Modified also had thirteen cars in attendance and after some really close racing it was Wiley Andy Wiles (Mopar) who was in the winners circle after he beat Chris Bustamante (chevy) who took the runner up honors. Nacho Nolasco (Chevy) came in third.
Mike Lynch Street Winner
Leo Quintana 2nd - Bonnie Wiles 3rd
We had the dirty dozen in Street class round robin to beat the wind, but this time the dust wouldn't settle, but they admirably raced on till the class finals were done with Mike Lynch (Chevy) beating runner up Leo Quintana (Mercury). Third place went to Bonnie Wiles (Mopar).
We would like to thank the following sponsors for making this race possible. Lightning Computer, Richard's Automotive, Lews Vinton Automotive and Car Parts Machine.
We will be taking our two month break with the next event being the Southern New Mexico Fall Classic on September 17th and 18th. So make your plans now, to attend.

1960 El Paso Drag Racing
Check out this great video from Joe Rago. These are the drags that used to be held at Ascarate Park and also includes some of the first races at Sunland Park. The video is hard to see at first but gets better. Notice the silver '40 Ford of Durwood Higgins and Bobby Irvin in the '53 Olds. Both cars had 671 GMC supper chargers. The '59 Chevy is Vince Sepich and I'm sure a few more can be identified. Anyone know who's blown front engine dragster is in there? more on the SWD Forum
IHRA.com : The International Hot Rod Association is pleased to welcome El Paso Motorplex to its family of member tracks as the sanctioning body steadily approaches record numbers for member tracks.
El Paso Motorplex, a brand new facility that will be opening its doors for the first time later this month, is the 12th different track to sign with the IHRA in 2011 as the IHRA member track list steadily approaches triple digits. The signing also brings the IHRA one step closer to adding a new division in the Summit SuperSeries as early as next year.
“We at IHRA are excited about bringing the new track in El Paso into the family. This is another step in forming a new division in the west,” said Phil Gingerich, IHRA Director of Track Development. “The owners and racers are really excited to have a place to race in El Paso. The future certainly looks bright at the new facility and for the IHRA as tracks all across the nation are starting to realize the benefit of partnering with the IHRA and taking advantage of its many great racing programs.”
El Paso Motorplex, located in western Texas, is an all-concrete track from starting line to the finish line. The track boasts plenty of paved pit parking with more to be added later this year. The track is also currently in the process of completing its tower, restrooms and concessions and the buzz in the community couldn’t be greater as the IHRA welcomes the 12th different track in the state of Texas making the Lone Star State the most populated IHRA state in the nation.
Currently the new track will reside in Division 4 in the Summit SuperSeries with hopes of adding a brand new division in the region as early as next season.
